King Richard l presented the first Royal Charter to the City on October 9th. Even though Hereford had always been known as a City from time Immemorial. That is the reason that our City Coat of Arms has the three lions of Richard the Lionheart in the centre.
We gave King Richard 40 pieces of Silver to help with his Holy War in the middle east. Every April Hereford City Council has to send off a cheque to the exchequer for £40 or we will lose our rights to be a City.
